FEDERICUS AND ALTAMURA … A LONG STORY
Federicus – Medieval Festival was born from the desire to enhance the territory of the city of Altamura, the most populous center of the Alta Murgia. Legend has it that Frederick II, who was passing through the city and headed for Bari to set sail for the Holy Land, left here malarial soldiers who were healed thanks to the healthy air of the place. To celebrate the miraculous healing, the emperor had the Cathedral built, the seat of the secular and ecclesiastical power of the medieval city. In reality, the Emperor wanted to build a church to obtain the benevolence of Pope Gregory IX, who had previously excommunicated him, in a city with a strategic position towards Bari and within the beloved Puglia.

Federicus is enchantment: a city that goes to sleep in the 21st century and wakes up in the Middle Ages. The Federicus event is a great medieval re-enactment that has reached its eighth edition in honor of Emperor Frederick II of Swabia who dresses in a theme and transforms the historic center of the city of Altamura for four intense and colorful days.
